Similarweb Alternatives: 5 Other Ways to Estimate Website Traffic

Similarweb estimates how much traffic any website gets, where it comes from and who visits. Its free pages show only a sample, and fuller access is sold as self-service or custom packages, so many people look for a Similarweb alternative. Below are five other tools that estimate traffic for websites you do not own, what each one actually measures, and what you can get free. One of them is TrendBreakouts, which is our own product; we say plainly where it falls short.

What Similarweb does

Similarweb is a web-intelligence platform. For any website it estimates total visits from every channel (direct, search, social, referral and display ads), engagement such as bounce rate and visit duration, traffic by country, audience demographics and interests, keywords, referring sites, competitors and the site's technology stack. The one thing to know before comparing tools: some alternatives measure total traffic like Similarweb, while others measure search traffic only, and the two numbers are not comparable.

The options in detail

  1. Start here: Similarweb (free version)

Best for: A quick look at any site before you pay for anything · similarweb.com

Before switching tools, check whether the free version is enough. Each website has a public page on similarweb.com with its traffic rank, visits and engagement, traffic by country, audience demographics, top traffic sources, keywords, referring sites, social and display traffic and the site's technology stack.

Similarweb calls the free data "a high-level sample" with "a limited set of features without deeper drill downs". Paid access is sold as self-service packages or custom packages through its sales team, and its pricing page lists no prices.

  2. 1. Semrush (Traffic & Market)

Best for: The closest like-for-like replacement for Similarweb's traffic and channel data · semrush.com

Semrush is best known for SEO, but its Traffic & Market toolkit is the part that competes with Similarweb: it estimates total traffic to any domain, not just search traffic, and breaks it down by acquisition channel, top pages and market landscape, with competitor alerts.

Its free website traffic checker estimates monthly traffic for any domain or URL, and Semrush has a Free plan. The Traffic & Market toolkit is priced separately from the SEO toolkits, so check which plan includes the reports you need.

  3. 2. Ahrefs

Best for: Understanding where a site's search traffic comes from · ahrefs.com

Ahrefs answers a narrower question than Similarweb. Site Explorer estimates a website's organic and AI search traffic from the keywords it ranks for, and shows the pages and keywords that bring it in, along with its backlinks.

That makes it a strong alternative if search is what you care about, but its traffic figures leave out direct, social and referral visits, so they are not comparable with Similarweb's total visits.

  4. 3. SE Ranking

Best for: SEO and PPC competitor research on a smaller budget · seranking.com

SE Ranking's competitive research estimates how many clicks a domain gets from Google's organic results (including AI-powered results) and from paid search, with the keywords, countries and history behind them.

Like Ahrefs it measures search traffic, not all visits. Competitor research is part of its base plans rather than a separate add-on.

  5. 4. Exploding Topics

Best for: Spotting rising topics and startups, plus a free traffic lookup · explodingtopics.com

Exploding Topics is a trend-discovery product owned by Semrush. Its free website traffic checker shows total visits, traffic sources, engagement and device split, and is powered by Semrush's traffic data.

Its main product is different from Similarweb: it tracks topics, products and startups whose search interest is growing, which is useful if you are looking for what is about to take off rather than measuring one website.

  6. 5. TrendBreakouts

Best for: Finding fast-growing websites and AI tools, and following monthly traffic history · trendbreakouts.com

TrendBreakouts is our own product, so read this one with that in mind. It ranks about 1.2 million websites by monthly visits and by growth, by category and by technology, and has profiles with a site's traffic trend, brand search volume, technology stack and similar sites, plus rankings of AI tools.

It is not a full Similarweb replacement. Its visit figures are themselves based on SimilarWeb estimates, so it is not an independent second opinion on a site's traffic; it is monthly only; and it has no traffic-source, country, engagement or audience breakdowns. Sites outside the tracked set have no data, and our monthly dataset runs a month or more behind the calendar. Where it helps is in finding the sites that are growing, rather than analysing one you already know.

See it in use: top websites by traffic, fastest growing websites, most popular AI tools and compare sites.

Which one to choose

  • You need total traffic and channels for any site: Similarweb's free pages first, then Semrush's Traffic & Market toolkit or the free checkers from Semrush and Exploding Topics.
  • You care about search (SEO or PPC): Ahrefs or SE Ranking. Their traffic numbers count search clicks only.
  • You want to find growing websites, AI tools or trends rather than analyse one site: TrendBreakouts or Exploding Topics.
  • It is your own website: none of these; your analytics measure real visits, not estimates.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best free Similarweb alternative?
It depends on which traffic you need. For total visits from every channel, the free website traffic checkers from Semrush and Exploding Topics (which uses Semrush data) are the closest match. If you only care about search traffic, Ahrefs and SE Ranking both have free traffic checkers. Similarweb's own free pages are also worth checking first.
Is Ahrefs a Similarweb alternative?
Only for search traffic. Ahrefs estimates organic and AI search traffic from keyword rankings, so its numbers leave out direct, social and referral visits and are not comparable with Similarweb's total visits. Semrush's Traffic & Market toolkit is the closer replacement for total traffic.
Where does TrendBreakouts get its traffic data?
TrendBreakouts' monthly visit figures are SimilarWeb-based estimates for a tracked set of about 1.2 million websites. What it adds is the rankings built on them: top and fastest growing websites by category and technology, AI tool rankings, brand search volume and technology stacks. It does not offer traffic-source, country or engagement breakdowns.
How accurate are website traffic estimates?
Every tool on this page estimates traffic for sites it does not own, from panels, clickstream or keyword-ranking models, so figures differ between tools and can be far off for small sites. Search-only tools (Ahrefs, SE Ranking) measure a different thing from total-traffic tools (Similarweb, Semrush Traffic & Market). For your own website, use your analytics.
